Getting into the Classroom!

Hi all!

The last couple weeks of September were busy, exploring new places and settling into life in Glasgow. The group did a day trip to Edinburgh to tour the castle, see the University of Edinburgh, and walk through the Princess Street Gardens. The cobblestone and historic architecture are always so cool to see and the history of the city is in everything.

I’ve been enjoying getting to know Glasgow and seeing what’s around the city. Bella and I spent a morning walking around Pollok Park to see the highland cows and get breakfast from the cafe in the park. A few of us also visited the Clydeside Distillery, we learned more about Glasgow’s industrial history and the significance of the River Clyde in building the city.

One of my favourite things so far has been taking a day trip to the Scottish Highlands. We got to stop in Inverness, taking a boat tour on the Loch Ness (no sighting of Nessie this time!), and passed through Perth, where we got to see more Highland coos (cows)!

I was able to start volunteering in the primary school as my police check was cleared! The staff and students are so kind and welcoming, each day I’m there I rotate through three different classes, from primary 1 (which is equivalent to kindergarten in Canada) all the way up to primary 7 (grade 6 in Canada). I typically work with students in small groups, supporting them in literacy and math activities and helping out wherever I’m needed in the classroom.

The students have been so curious, they’ve loved asking questions about Canada and pointing out how I pronounce words and phrases differently with my accent. It’s been fun getting to know the students and how different the classrooms are from those at home!

I’m looking forward to spending more time in the classroom and getting around to see more of Scotland!

Cheers, Emma 🙂
