Hello! I have now been back in Calgary for 10 days, and have had a chance to reflect on my time in Hamburg.
Overall, my experience in Hamburg was amazing! I loved living in a new city and figuring out all of the challenges that came along with that such as using public transportation to get around, figuring out how to do laundry without a dryer, and navigating daily life as someone who does not speak the primary language.
For any education students considering joining the TAB program, I would absolutely recommend applying for a placement in Hamburg. Our contacts at the University of Hamburg as well as the teachers at my placement school were very friendly and welcoming. We had the opportunity to be in our placement school for about 15 hours a week. However, our schedule was very flexible which left lots of time for our university course work, exploring Hamburg, and doing other short trips within Europe.
Hamburg itself is a very beautiful city. Although it is much newer and has a bit less of a “Europe” feel, there is lots of beautiful architecture, delicious cafes, and gorgeous parks to explore.
Although German in most commonly spoken many people in Hamburg know English, meaning that it is not too difficult to communicate with locals.
I am already missing my time in Hamburg but am grateful for this experience and all that it has taught me!
