First Day of School in Germany

Our first day of school here in Hamburg was truly special—it was the first day of school for the first graders, and the entire day felt like a celebration. Hannah, Jenica, and I had the opportunity to attend the welcoming ceremony in the school auditorium, where the third graders performed a wonderful play to greet the new students.

What really caught my attention were the first graders carrying large, cone-shaped baskets, some of which were taller than the children themselves! We soon learned that this is a unique German tradition called the “Schultüte,” where students receive cones filled with treats and school supplies to mark their first day of school. I thought it was so cute and meaningful!

The school was filled with families gathered to celebrate, and even the older students were involved. In addition to the third graders’ play, the fourth graders brought baked goods, while the second graders waved ribbons to create a festive path for the first graders. It was heartwarming to see all the parents capturing this memorable day with photos. Older siblings in the upper grades were even released early to spend this special day with their families—a thoughtful gesture that made the occasion even more meaningful.

What a wonderful way to celebrate the children’s academic journey!
