Fairy Pools & Inverness

Hi everyone!

I’ve been back in Calgary about a month and a half–I got swept up by practicum almost as soon as I got back. Practicum has been great, but I’ve found myself missing Scotland all throughout. TAB was truly a transformative experience. I’ve stayed in touch with my mentor teacher from Coatbridge, and she told me the kids are still asking about when I’m coming back, which is really sweet. The skills I built during TAB also helped me infinitely during practicum–it was nice to ease my way back into the classroom through my volunteering in Scotland.

During my last bit of time in Scotland, I managed to make it to Inverness and the Isle of Skye with Emma and Jaleesa, despite catching the flu. I’m so glad I ended up going because it was so fun. It’s super cheap and easy to get to the north of Scotland with a FlexBus (plus it’s through the Highlands so there are great views!). Our guided tour to the Isle of Skye was amazing! We got to hike to the fairy pools, which is something I’ve wanted to do for years. We also dipped our faces in the water under the Old Sligacan Bridge; legend has it that the water is enchanted and grants its visitors eternal youth and beauty. If you plan on visiting Isle of Skye be sure to go before November–the weather gets extreme and most residents move to the mainland for the winter. If you have time, I would highly recommend Isle of Skye, but be sure to either rent a car or book a guided tour.

I miss TAB so much! Scotland is such a beautiful place with so many friendly people. I can’t wait to go back someday. Many tourists walk from Glasgow to the Highlands in the summer while camping (you can camp anywhere in Scotland), and I would love to do that at some point.
