Beluga whales and hot air balloons

Writing my blog post today I am overcome with a mixture of emotions. My time in Madrid is coming to an end and it’s hard to believe how quickly it’s gone by. I’ve explored so much in and around the city and made memories that will last a lifetime. Although I am sad to say goodbye to my lifestyle here, I know I am leaving with great experiences.

This past weekend I went on a short trip to Valencia. Although I expected to enjoy the beaches, I was actually more captivated by the stunning architecture of the City of Arts and Sciences complex. The futuristic designs and unique structures were something that I had never seen before. However my favourite part here was visiting the largest aquarium in Europe. I got to see all types of marine life and watch a 4-D movie!

Back in Madrid, Manuela and I attended “Festival Globos” (a hot air balloon festival) in Aranjuez. The event took place right in front of the palace, making it an even more unforgettable experience. The sight of colorful hot air balloons rising against the backdrop of the palace was truly magical.

Next, I finally went to an Atletico Madrid game. Thanks to the expertise of my roommate Cory, I got tickets where I would be sitting behind the Ultras, the most passionate and animated fans. At times, I found myself more entertained by their enthusiastic cheers and chants than the actual match itself. The atmosphere in the stadium made me wish I had attended more football matches during my time here, but I am grateful that I at least attended one.

As my time in Madrid draws to a close, so does my time at SEK El Castillo. The journey at the school has been nothing short of incredible. Despite the occasional chaos in the classroom, I’ve watched the students build a stronger bond with me over time. They’ve become comfortable asking for my help and telling me stories as I’ve become a part of their weekly routine. Currently, the year one classrooms are delving into the “unit of inquiry” about community, exploring places, people, and their roles in the community. It’s been heartwarming to witness their growth and curiosity. The teachers are also so welcoming making sure I can always be of help!

For now I need to finish packing for my solo weekend trip to Portugal, and I look forward to making the most of my last two weeks on TAB!
