Final Weeks in Hamburg

Moin!

And just like that we only have a week left of our placements in Hamburg; the last six weeks have really flown by! Here students have a school break at the end of October, which means that there are no classes for students and we do not have any activities planned by our school liaison. Myself and a few other students placed in Hamburg are using this free week to do some travel outside of Germany as well as recharge before we begin Field 3 back in Calgary.

This week I had the opportunity to join my grade one class on a whole-school field trip to the theatre! All 600 students from my placement school attended and we took the train together to get to and from the theatre. While getting all of the students safely on the train was a bit stressful, it was really interesting to see how field trip logistics work in a city that primarily relies on public transportation. The grade one students were especially excited about taking a train that was reserved just for our school and they did a great job listening to instructions and navigating the train stations.

Last week I also taught my grade-one students a little bit about Canada, including the activities, food, and animals that are common in our country. It was lots of fun to compare and contrast my life in Canada with their lives in Germany. They especially loved learning about Canadian animals as many animals, such as beavers and moose, are not as common in Germany as they are in Canada. However, the Canadian animal they were most excited to talk about was definitely the polar bear!

I have made a lot of great connections with the students in my class despite the German-English language barrier and will be sad to say goodbye to them next week. At the same time, I am looking forward to coming home to Calgary and sharing all of my experiences with my friends and family. I am also looking forward to using all that I have learned from this experience in my Field 3 classroom!
