I am writing this final blog post from my bed back home in Calgary, reminiscing fondly about the life I lived just days ago. My time in Hamburg unfortunately flew by quicker than I could’ve imagined and it feels so surreal and bittersweet to be back to reality here in Canada. The city, people, and lifestyle in Hamburg were so easy to fall in love with and I already miss it all so dearly. My final week was filled with so much intense emotion as I said goodbye to my home away from home, the students I came to adore, and my fellow TABers who quickly became great friends. I tried my best to savour every last moment and soak it all in as much as I could.
My final days at Schule an Der Gartenstadt mostly consisted of quality time with the kids and with my partner teacher. We listened to music, made thanksgiving crafts, read together, ate treats, and overall just had a blast. On my last visit, the class gave me a “hot shower” where I sat in the middle of the room and students took turns sharing their favourite memories of our time together and what they liked about having me at their school. It was touching to hear how much I impacted them, often in ways I didn’t even realize. The day ended with tears and plenty of tight hugs goodbye.
This experience was life changing to say the least and I am so grateful for every moment. Hamburg and the class of 3d will forever have a special place in my heart. <3
